Following a huge athletic accomplishment the question asked, “What are you going to do now?” is excitedly followed with the response, “Going to Disney World!” This August, that question will ring true more than ever for the competitors in the 2022 Department of Defense Warrior Games. The DoD Warrior Games, which has been held annually since 2010, is a patriotic event that celebrates the honor and dedication of those who have been wounded, ill, and injured veterans during active duty to protect their country. Hundreds of our heroes will participate and compete in adaptive sporting events including: wheelchair basketball, cycling, indoor rowing, and sitting volleyball and many more! These brave men and women have sacrificed more than we can imagine for the United States of America and Disney is beyond grateful for their resilience. The Walt Disney World Company is thrilled to host this heroic event, and delighted to donate the space of the ESPN Wide World Sports Complex for the first time. The 220-acre facility will be full of heroes, loved ones, and DVC members from August 19-28 this summer.
“On behalf of the U.S. Army, we are truly honored to host the Department of Defense 2022 Warrior Games,” said Gen. Paul Funk II, commander of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. “Our incredible Warrior-Athletes have overcome tremendous obstacles and we are excited to watch their resiliency and dedication in action. They represent the very best of our Nation.”
The event was set to take place summer 2021, but had to be rescheduled due to COVID related concerns.
Jeff Vahle, president of The Walt Disney World Resort is humbled to be apart of this event as he states:
“These courageous service members, injured during their military duty, have demonstrated their resilience and an ability to overcome unthinkable obstacles, they are the truest definition of the warrior’s spirit, and we are honored to welcome them to the Warrior Games at ESPN Wide World of Sports this summer.”
If your DVC Vacation falls during August 19-28, be sure to make some time to pay tribute and cheer on our real life heroes at the ESPN Wide World Sports Complex!
