There are big Hollywood Studios Muppets changes happening. We first heard about a Monsters land coming to Hollywood Studios at the August 2024 D23 event. After that, many fans wondered where exactly that would be going. Is Monsters replacing Muppets? Is the Hollywood Studios Muppets show going away? Disney has confirmed that the Monsters Inc. land will replace MuppetVision 3D and the surrounding area. The Muppets will have a new home at Hollywood Studios on the other side of the park. Here’s everything we know so far.
Muppets Changes at Hollywood Studios
Though the current Muppets area at Hollywood Studios will close, these characters will take over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. This is a great addition to an already popular ride. The attraction has featured the band Aerosmith and played their music as the soundtrack since it opened in 1999.
Based on the announcement, it seems like we can expect a lot of the attraction to stay the same. The concept art for the new version shows the Muppets characters in what looks like a super stretch. It does appear like this could be a simple trade of Aerosmith for the Muppets. There are quite a few Muppets songs to pull from. There could be new music from this colorful group too.
There may be disappointment from some Muppet fans who don’t enjoy thrill rides. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is a wild rollercoaster and the only attraction to go upside down at Walt Disney World Resort.
We can expect the gift shop at the end of the ride to have a grand Muppets makeover as well.
When is MuppetVision 3D closing? When will MuppetVision 3D close?
We don’t have answers for any of these attractions, or the area, closing. Disney says there is plenty of time to enjoy them still.
Disney also says, “As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.”
It won’t be in this themed space of course. Maybe it could rotate through Walt Disney Presents or another theater in the park.
What will replace Muppets at Hollywood Studios in Disney World?
Disney says of Monsters Inc. at Hollywood Studios, “the new land will include the coaster we’ve all dreamed of – a suspended ride recreating the door vault scene – plus dining and shopping and a whole new theater show.”
Here’s what we could see in the Monster land:
- a Monsters Inc. door coaster
- a new Monsters Inc. theater show
- dining with Harryhausen’s replacing Mama Melrose
- shopping perhaps taking the place of It’s a Wonderful Shop and the surrounding area
Does the Muppets Hollywood Studios Mix Up Add to the Park?
While true expansions and additions are exciting, it’s different when Disney replaces something in the park. Feelings change about a new ride when it means an old favorite tradition might be going away. In this case two attractions are being replaced with two others. Fans of MuppetVision 3D will be disappointed. It’s especially bitter because this attraction was the last thing Jim Henson worked on before his passing.
When a brand new attraction is built, that usually expands the capacity in the park. It means there are more things to do and more places for people to go in the park. Replacing an attraction may actually reduce capacity. We can assume Muppets Rock n Roller Coaster will stay the same, getting on just as many people as it is now.
The Muppet Vision theater is huge with hundreds of seats. It easily could accommodate thousands of people per hour. Especially during the holiday season when the park is packed and the theater nearly fills.
With the Monsters Inc. land, using the existing Muppet Vision theater and adding the door coaster with a brand new building, this at least adds one new attraction to the park.
